Here are few things to look for when talking with breeders.

  • Why was this breeding done?
  • What makes each parent breedworthy?  What have the parents done that justify breeding?  (bad answers include "I needed the money"  "The kids wanted to see a litter be born" "Both parents have papers"  "I'm having a clearance sale on puppies"  "I couldn't sell the mother, so I just bred her"  "The parents have been good pets"   "Oops"  )
  • Health clearances for sire and dam
  • Health guarantees for puppies in a contract
  • A breeder that talks about their breed's history and their breeding goals
  • Ask if you can visit their facility and meet their dogs
  • What vaccination and de-worming schedule is the puppy on?
  • You may ask for references or to speak with their veterinarian.
  • Ask about the dog's pedigree and what to expect from these lines.
  • Don't be fooled by fancy web sites, ask questions and expect intelligent answers.  Good breeders love to talk about their dogs, their breed, and their goals as breeders.

Don't be be surprised if...
  • the breeder asks you questions, good breeders screen their potential puppy buyers and want to place them in forever homes
  • your pet companion is sold with limited AKC papers and they advocate spaying and neutering at the appropriate age
  • the breeder asks you to stay in contact and send pictures in the future
  • the price of your puppy is higher than many found in the newspaper or your neighborhood, as good breeders have a substantial investment in their dogs and backyard breeders do not
  • the breeder asks that you complete at least a basic obedience course with your dog
  • the breeder asks that you take your puppy into a vet within a short time from purchase to maintain continuity with the vaccination and de-worming schedule and establish a positive working relationship with the veterinarian and your pet

Don't forget that rescues can make excellent pets as well.
